The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball bounced back from a loss Friday at Elgin to beat McHenry County on Saturday to split a weekend road trip.
Sandburg lost 82-73 at Elgin despite a sophomore forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) picking up his seventh double-double of the season. Robinson finished with a team-best 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, added a game-high 11 rebounds and also led all players with four steals.
Freshman Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) added 15 points, and sophomore Ben Stipp (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) chipped in 11 points for the Chargers, who trailed 37-34 at halftime and were outscored 45-39 in the second half.
Sandburg shot 43 percent from the field but made just 3 of 15 3-point attempts. The Chargers were 20 of 24 from the free-throw line.
Sandburg came back less than 24 hours later to defeat McHenry County 69-45 on Saturday afternoon as Robinson and Fayhee each notched double-doubles. Robinson finished with 17 points and 10 boards, while Fayhee had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Scott Gowan hit 4 of 5 3s while finishing with 14 points, and Stipp added 10 points for Sandburg, which extended a 32-23 halftime lead.
The Chargers also finished 15 of 16 from the line, pushing their season mark to 81.1 percent — good for second in the country.
The Chargers (9-4) will play at Culver-Stockton JV at 7:30 p.m. Thursday before hosting Glen Oaks (Mich.) at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
